Background:

The integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) into nursing practice is rapidly evolving.
Understanding expert and patient perspectives is crucial for predicting future healthcare scenarios.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe expert and patient views on future ICT use in nursing practice, set in the year 2010.
To outline future nursing scenarios based on expert consensus regarding ICT probability and desirability.

Main Methods:

Utilized the Delphi method with a Finnish expert panel (N=81) comprising nurses, managers, educators, IT professionals, and patients.
Conducted three Delphi rounds between 2001-2002, gathering data through qualitative and quantitative analyses.
Assessed ICT use from perspectives of probability and desirability.

Main Results:

Experts reached higher consensus on the desirability of ICT in nursing than its probability of implementation.
Three distinct future nursing scenarios were identified: knowledge management, patient orientation/self-care, and the technology-human dynamic.
The study projected views from the year 2010 regarding ICT adoption in nursing.
