Summary

Right ventricular wave speed (c) was measured and found to be proportional to elastance. This provides crucial data for analyzing wave intensity and energy transport in the circulation.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Physiology
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Wave-intensity analysis requires wave speed (c) to quantify energy transport.
  • Right ventricular (RV) wave speed (c) and its relationship with RV elastance are not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure RV wave speed (c) throughout the cardiac cycle in dogs.
  • To compare measured RV wave speed (c) with RV elastance.

Main Methods:

  • RV pressures, pulmonary arterial flow, and RV volume were measured in 7 dogs.
  • Wave speed (c) was determined by transit time between RV pressure transducers.
  • RV elastance was calculated from RV volume measurements.

Main Results:

  • RV wave speed (c) varied from 1 m/s (diastole) to 4 m/s (systole).
  • Log-log plots of wave speed (c) versus elastance were linear with a slope of 0.31.
  • RV wave speed (c) is approximately proportional to the 1/3 power of elastance.

Conclusions:

  • The relationship between RV wave speed (c) and elastance was quantified.
  • This provides a basis for accurate wave-intensity analysis and energy quantification in the RV.
  • Findings offer insights into RV mechanics and wave propagation.
