Area of Science:

  • Surgical procedures
  • Gastroenterology
  • Pelvic floor disorders

Background:

  • Open rectovaginopexy is a recognized treatment for rectal prolapse and anterior rectocele.
  • Laparoscopic rectovaginopexy (LRVP) offers a minimally invasive alternative.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of laparoscopic rectovaginopexy (LRVP) for rectal prolapse.
  • To assess the feasibility, efficacy, and safety of LRVP.

Main Methods:

  • A series of 14 patients with rectal prolapse underwent LRVP.
  • Pre-, peri-, and postoperative parameters were meticulously recorded.
  • Patient follow-up was conducted in an outpatient setting.

Main Results:

  • 85% of patients experienced symptom resolution or significant improvement.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Anal incontinence improved in 69% of cases, and constipation improved in 66% of affected patients.
  • Recurrence occurred in 15% of patients; morbidity and mortality were deemed acceptable given patient demographics.
  • Conclusions:

    • Laparoscopic rectovaginopexy (LRVP) is a feasible and effective surgical option for rectal prolapse.
    • The procedure showed no instances of operation-induced constipation.
    • LRVP appears to be a safe and effective treatment for rectal prolapse, particularly in elderly patients with comorbidities.
