Total joint replacement surgery, including total knee replacement (TKR) and total hip replacement (THR), can be safely performed in rural hospitals. These procedures demonstrate high patient satisfaction and low complication rates, benefiting rural communities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of total joint replacement surgery in a rural hospital.
  • To determine patient satisfaction and complication rates for total knee replacement (TKR) and total hip replacement (THR) in a rural setting.

Main Methods:

  • A case series design was employed at a rural district hospital.
  • 64 patients underwent TKR and 63 patients underwent THR.
  • Outcomes measured included patient satisfaction and incidence of specific postoperative complications (infection, dislocation, manipulation under anesthesia).

Main Results:

  • No deep wound infections occurred in either TKR or THR patients.
  • Postoperative complications included manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) for 8.8% of TKR patients and dislocation for 5.8% of THR patients.
  • Patient satisfaction was high: 95.3% for TKR and 97.0% for THR.

  • Total joint replacement surgery can achieve high patient satisfaction and low infection rates in rural hospitals.
  • Acceptable complication rates for TKR (MUA) and THR (dislocation) were observed.
  • Rural centers can successfully perform joint replacement surgery, improving access to care for rural populations.
