Summary

True vaginal prolapse is a rare condition in female dogs, often linked to difficult births (dystocia). This case highlights dystocia as a likely cause, successfully treated with surgery.

Background:

  • Vaginal fold prolapse, characterized by edematous vaginal tissue protrusion, commonly occurs during proestrus and estrus in female dogs.
  • True vaginal prolapse, though rare in canines, can occur near parturition due to hormonal shifts (declining progesterone, increasing estrogen).

Observation:

  • A 5-year-old, cross-breed dog presented with dystocia and true vaginal prolapse.
  • Diagnostic imaging revealed live and deceased fetuses, necessitating a cesarean section.
  • The vaginal prolapse was managed concurrently with the cesarean section via surgical repositioning.

Findings:

  • The canine recovered fully following ovariohysterectomy after successful repositioning of the prolapsed vaginal tissue.
  • No recurrence of vaginal prolapse was noted post-surgery.
