Background:

Effective treatments for problem drinking exist, yet few individuals access professional help.
Understanding the barriers and facilitators to seeking help is crucial for public health interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate factors influencing help-seeking for alcohol-related difficulties.
To identify predictors of help-seeking intentions and behaviors in problem drinkers.

Main Methods:

Two studies were conducted involving questionnaires on alcohol use, problems, readiness to change, and help-seeking interest.
Study 1 included a measure of stigma related to alcohol help-seeking. Study 2 used multi-item measures of help-seeking intentions, attitudes, and personality.

Main Results:

In Study 1, problem recognition, anxiety symptoms, and perceived stigma predicted overall help-seeking.
In Study 2, positive attitudes, lower perceived stigma, and higher self-efficacy were associated with increased help-seeking intentions.
Both approach (e.g., positive attitudes) and avoidance (e.g., stigma) factors significantly influence decisions to seek help.

Conclusions:

Addressing stigma and enhancing self-efficacy are important targets for interventions.
Future research should further explore the complex interplay of factors affecting help-seeking for alcohol problems.
