Summary

Korean mistletoe lectin (VCA) exhibits dual effects on immune cells, inhibiting proliferation at high doses and enhancing it at low doses. VCA also modulates cytokine secretion, suggesting potential as an immunomodulator.

Background:

  • European mistletoe extracts are known for immune-stimulating properties.
  • Korean mistletoe lectin (VCA) has been less studied for therapeutic potential, particularly as an immunomodulator.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the immunomodulatory effects of Korean mistletoe lectin (VCA) on murine splenocytes.
  • To determine VCA's impact on splenocyte proliferation and cytokine secretion.

Main Methods:

  • Murine splenocytes were treated with varying concentrations of VCA.
  • Cell proliferation was assessed using standard assays.
  • Cytokine levels (IFN-gamma and IL-4) were measured in stimulated splenocytes.

Main Results:

  • VCA inhibited splenocyte proliferation at higher concentrations (1-8 ng/ml) and enhanced it at lower concentrations (4-32 pg/ml).
  • VCA decreased interferon (IFN)-gamma secretion in concanavalin A (ConA)-stimulated splenocytes (4-64 ng/ml) without affecting IL-4 levels.

Conclusions:

  • VCA demonstrates dose-dependent immunomodulatory activity on murine splenocytes.
  • VCA may influence the Th1/Th2 immune response balance, indicating potential therapeutic applications.
