Endoscopic Procedures I: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy

An Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a diagnostic procedure in which an endoscopist uses a flexible, lighted endoscope to visualize the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Background:

  • Utilized a portable endoscope system (0.9 mm tip diameter) for postmortem eye examination.
  • Procedure required minimal assistance and approximately 5 minutes per case.
  • Examined 46 forensic autopsy cases.

  • Abnormal intraocular findings were present in 22 (47.8%) of 46 cases.
  • Fundus hemorrhages and papilledema were noted in head trauma cases, aiding in time-of-death estimation.
  • Retinal splinter hemorrhages and fundus hemorrhages were observed in asphyxia and drowning cases, respectively.

Conclusions:
