Background:

  • Pediatric HIV infection presents a substantial and increasing global health challenge, disproportionately affecting sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Coinfection with pathogens accelerates HIV/AIDS progression, while disease-induced immunosuppression heightens susceptibility to opportunistic infections.

Observation:

  • Despite the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, amebiasis has not been widely recognized as a primary cause of illness in affected children.
  • Emerging evidence indicates a potential link between amebiasis and increased morbidity in individuals with HIV/AIDS.

Findings:

  • Recent information suggests that amebiasis could represent an underappreciated risk factor for individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
