Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of carotid artery cannulation for aortic surgery.
  • To evaluate postoperative outcomes after 100 procedures using this method.

Main Methods:

  • 100 patients underwent aortic surgery with carotid artery cannulation for arterial return.
  • Unilateral cerebral perfusion was performed during circulatory arrest via the arterial line.
  • Procedures involved moderate hypothermia (mean 28°C).

Main Results:

  • Adequate arterial return was achieved in all patients; no switch in cannulation site was needed.
  • No cannulation-site complications were observed.
  • 30-day mortality was 2.0% overall (3.7% for dissection group); 2 strokes occurred in patients with severe aortic valve calcification.
