Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), or shock therapy, remains a critical biomedical intervention for severe, treatment-resistant depression. Summary

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is safe for patients with intracranial cavernous hemangiomas, despite theoretical risks. This study supports careful ECT administration in patients with these vascular malformations.

Background:

  • Intracranial vascular malformations (IVMs) are rare, and their association with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is not well-established.
  • Limited case reports suggest potential risks of complications during ECT in patients with IVMs.

Observation:

  • This study details the cases of 3 patients diagnosed with intracranial cavernous hemangiomas.
  • All 3 patients underwent electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) without any reported complications.

Findings:

  • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) can be administered safely to patients with intracranial cavernous hemangiomas.
  • The presence of cavernous hemangiomas did not lead to adverse events during ECT in this patient cohort.

Implications:

  • These findings suggest that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may be a viable treatment option for patients with intracranial cavernous hemangiomas.
  • Recommendations for safe ECT practice in patients with IVMs are provided, potentially expanding treatment options for this population.
