Obstructive cholelithiasis and cholecystitis in a keeshond.

Summary

A Keeshond experienced vomiting and jaundice due to gallstones. Surgical removal of choleliths (gallstones) from the gallbladder and bile duct resolved the obstructive cholelithiasis.

Background:

Obstructive cholelithiasis is a rare but serious condition in dogs.
Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for successful outcomes.

Observation:

A 10-year-old neutered male Keeshond presented with anorexia, lethargy, vomiting, and icterus.
Diagnostic imaging, including abdominal radiography and ultrasonography, revealed choleliths obstructing the gallbladder and common bile duct.

Findings:

Serum biochemical analysis supported the diagnosis of obstructive cholelithiasis.
A cholecystotomy was performed to surgically remove the choleliths from the gallbladder and common bile duct.

Implications:

This case highlights the importance of diagnostic imaging in identifying obstructive cholelithiasis in dogs.
Surgical cholelith removal via cholecystotomy is an effective treatment for obstructive cholelithiasis in canines.
Prompt surgical intervention can lead to a favorable prognosis in dogs with obstructive gallstones.
