Summary

Accurate public health workforce data is crucial for planning. Current systems, including the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Standard Occupational Classification (SOC), are limited and need revision to better capture the diverse public health workforce.

Background:

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is a primary source for US workforce data.
In 1998, 14 public health workforce titles were added to the BLS Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system.
Existing data collection methods inadequately capture the full scope of the public health workforce.

Purpose of the Study:

To highlight the limitations of current public health workforce data collection.
To advocate for improvements in the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system.
To inform planning for the present and future public health workforce.

Main Methods:

Analysis of the limitations of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system for public health.
Review of existing data collection challenges for a multidisciplinary public health workforce.
Identification of an opportunity for community advocacy during the 2010 Census SOC revision.

Main Results:

The 1998 addition of public health titles to the SOC system did not resolve fundamental data collection issues.
BLS statistics capture only a limited portion of the broadly defined public health workforce.
A standardized data collection system is essential for effective workforce planning.

Conclusions:

The upcoming revision of the 1998 SOC presents a critical opportunity to improve public health workforce enumeration.
Advocacy for more inclusive occupational categories is needed.
Enhanced data collection will better inform policies and planning for the public health workforce.
