Summary

Hydroxyethylstarch (HES) infusion effectively manages blood viscosity and prevents hypotension during intradural anesthesia. This study shows HES is a viable option for patients undergoing spinal anesthesia.

Area of Science:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Pharmacology
  • Hematology

Context:

  • Intradural anesthesia can cause hypotension.
  • Hydroxyethylstarch (HES) is a colloid solution used for volume replacement.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the effect of HES infusion on blood viscosity.
  • To assess HES's efficacy in preventing hypotension during intradural anesthesia.

Summary:

  • Twenty healthy patients received 500 ml HES infusion before intradural anesthesia.
  • Blood viscosity, hematological parameters, and biochemical values were measured.
  • Mean and diastolic blood pressure showed a minor reduction (<10 mmHg), while systolic pressure remained stable. Packed red cell volume decreased by 5.7%, and blood viscosity reduced by 0.5-2.3 mPas.

Impact:

  • HES demonstrates plasma volume-expanding effects and induces hemodilution.
  • HES is a suitable option for managing hemodynamics during intradural anesthesia.
  • Findings support HES use for preventing anesthetic-induced hypotension.
