Ionic and segmental motions in polymer salt complexes (PSCs) were studied using broadband conductive spectroscopy. The study reveals the nearly constant loss (NCL) phenomenon and its crossover to ion hopping in polymer electrolytes.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Solid State Physics
- Electrochemistry
Background:
- Polymer salt complexes (PSCs) are crucial for advanced battery technologies.
- Understanding ion transport mechanisms in PSCs is essential for performance optimization.
- Polyethylene oxide (PEO) based electrolytes with LiClO4 or LiCF3SO3 are widely investigated.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate ionic and segmental motions in PEO-based polymer salt complexes.
- To analyze the temperature and frequency dependence of conductivity.
- To identify and characterize ion transport mechanisms, including the nearly constant loss (NCL) phenomenon.
Main Methods:
- Broadband conductive spectroscopy from 10(-2) to 10(6) Hz.
- Analysis of temperature-dependent dc conductivity using the Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher (VTF) equation.
- Examination of ac conductivity behavior at varying temperatures and frequencies.
Main Results:
- DC conductivity follows the VTF equation, correlating with free volume changes.
- The nearly constant loss (NCL) phenomenon was observed in polymer electrolytes below 223 K.
- A crossover from NCL to cooperative ion hopping was identified at higher temperatures.
Conclusions:
- The NCL phenomenon is operative in polymer electrolytes, similar to glassy and ceramic ion conductors.
- A direct correlation exists between ionic conductivity and segmental relaxation processes in PSCs.
- Free volume changes significantly influence the temperature dependence of dc conductivity in these materials.

Atomic Nuclei: Types of Nuclear Relaxation
In spin–lattice or longitudinal relaxation, the excited spins exchange energy with the surrounding lattice as they return to the lower energy level. Among several mechanisms that contribute to spin–lattice relaxation, magnetic dipolar interactions are significant. Here, the excited nucleus transfers energy to a nearby...
The Nernst Equation
The interconnection between standard cell potentials and various thermodynamic parameters such as the standard free energy change ΔG° and equilibrium constant K has been previously explored. For example, a redox reaction involving zinc(II) and tin(II) ions at 1 M concentration with Eºcell = +0.291 V and ΔG° = −56.2 kJ is spontaneous.
