Area of Science:

  • Pediatrics
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Virology

Background:

  • The United Kingdom is experiencing a significant mumps epidemic, with a 28-fold increase in cases over the past decade.
  • Mumps parotitis, typically affecting older children and adults, has seen a rise in infant cases.

Observation:

  • A 10-week-old female infant presented with unilateral, non-tender facial swelling.
  • Clinical examination revealed no constitutional symptoms, erythema, or induration.

Findings:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and serological tests confirmed unilateral mumps parotitis.
  • This represents a previously unreported occurrence of mumps parotitis in an infant.

Implications:

  • Mumps parotitis should be included in the differential diagnosis for infants with parotid gland swelling.
  • Increased awareness and surveillance are necessary due to the rising incidence in infants.
  • This highlights the evolving epidemiology of mumps during outbreaks.
