This study presents a rare case of thymic basaloid carcinoma combined with a multilocular thymic cyst (MTC). The combined tumor was successfully resected after neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Area of Science:

  • Thoracic Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Thymic basaloid carcinoma is an exceptionally rare malignancy.
  • Multilocular thymic cysts (MTC) are benign thymic lesions.
  • Co-occurrence of these two distinct entities is exceedingly uncommon.

Observation:

  • A 72-year-old male presented with an anterior mediastinal mass detected on chest X-ray.
  • Imaging revealed a smooth-edged tumor with cystic changes after neoadjuvant therapy.
  • The resected specimen showed thymic basaloid carcinoma coexisting with a large MTC.

Findings:

  • The resected tumor comprised thymic basaloid carcinoma (3 cm) and MTC (8.2 cm).
  • The patient underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy (CPT-11) and radiotherapy, followed by surgical resection.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case represents the 14th reported instance of thymic basaloid carcinoma.
  • Implications:

    • Highlights the importance of multidisciplinary treatment for rare thymic neoplasms.
    • Suggests potential for cystic transformation in thymic basaloid carcinoma with treatment.
    • Contributes to the limited understanding of thymic basaloid carcinoma and its management.
