Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Nail Diseases

Background:

  • Psoriasis is often considered a contraindication for artificial nails due to the risk of Koebner phenomenon.
  • However, other potential interactions between psoriasis and artificial nails are not extensively documented.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe additional interactions between psoriasis and artificial nails beyond the Koebner phenomenon.
  • To highlight increased risks of infection and allergic reactions in psoriatic patients using artificial nails.

Main Methods:

  • Review of clinical cases involving patients with psoriasis and artificial nails.
  • Analysis of reported adverse events and clinical presentations.

Main Results:

  • Artificial nails can exacerbate nail psoriasis.
  • Psoriatic patients using artificial nails face a higher risk of infections.
  • Allergic reactions to artificial nails present clinical similarities to nail psoriasis.

Conclusions:

  • Artificial nails pose multiple risks for individuals with psoriasis, including disease worsening and increased susceptibility to infections.
  • The differential diagnosis of nail changes in psoriatic patients using artificial nails must consider allergic reactions.
