Summary

Adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) show distinct EEG patterns, including increased delta and theta activity. These findings suggest atypical central nervous system development in youth with AD/HD.

Background:

  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder.
  • Understanding the neurophysiological underpinnings of AD/HD in adolescents is crucial for diagnosis and intervention.
  • Previous research has explored electroencephalogram (EEG) differences in AD/HD, but studies in adolescent populations are less common.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate electroencephalogram (EEG) abnormalities in adolescents diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD).
  • To compare EEG power spectrum and ratio measures between adolescents with AD/HD and typically developing controls.
  • To explore potential neurodevelopmental deviations associated with AD/HD in adolescence.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 15 adolescents with AD/HD and 15 age-matched controls (14-17 years).
  • Recorded resting-state EEG from 19 electrode sites under eyes-closed conditions.
  • Analyzed absolute and relative power in delta, theta, alpha, and beta bands, and calculated theta/alpha and theta/beta ratios.

Main Results:

  • AD/HD group exhibited greater absolute delta and theta activity across the scalp compared to controls.
  • AD/HD subjects showed a significantly increased theta/beta ratio.
  • A reduction in relative beta activity was observed in the posterior regions of AD/HD participants.

Conclusions:

  • Adolescents with AD/HD display significant deviations in central nervous system (CNS) development, particularly in posterior brain regions.
  • The observed EEG profile in AD/HD adolescents is not indicative of a simple maturational lag.
  • Findings support the hypothesis that specific EEG patterns are associated with AD/HD during adolescence.
