    Summary

D-Thyroxine treatment for hyperlipoproteinaemia showed a temporary 15% cholesterol reduction in patients. However, the overall response to this cholesterol-lowering drug was deemed unimpressive over four years.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Endocrinology
    • Metabolic Disorders

    Background:

    • Hyperlipoproteinaemia (Fredrickson type IIa) is a condition characterized by elevated lipid levels.
    • Effective long-term management strategies for hyperlipoproteinaemia are crucial for cardiovascular health.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of D-Thyroxine in managing hyperlipoproteinaemia.
    • To assess the long-term effects of D-Thyroxine on cholesterol levels in patients with Fredrickson type IIa hyperlipoproteinaemia.

    Main Methods:

    • Intermittent administration of D-Thyroxine to 11 patients.
    • Concurrent prescription of practolol to mitigate cardiac stimulation.
    • Regular monitoring of cholesterol levels over a 4-year period.

    Main Results:

    • A transient mean reduction of approximately 15% in cholesterol levels was observed.
    • The cholesterol-lowering effect of D-Thyroxine was temporary.

    Conclusions:

    • D-Thyroxine demonstrated a limited and temporary impact on cholesterol levels in hyperlipoproteinaemia.
    • The overall therapeutic response to D-Thyroxine for this condition was considered unimpressive.
