Summary

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) prevalence and clinical course were similar in Hispanic and non-Hispanic patients. This study challenges previous assumptions about GCA rarity in Hispanic populations.

Background:

  • Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a vasculitis that typically affects individuals over 50.
  • Previous reports suggest GCA is less common in Hispanic populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the prevalence and clinical course of GCA between Hispanic and non-Hispanic patients.
  • To investigate potential ethnic disparities in GCA presentation and outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative case series design was employed.
  • 257 patients undergoing temporal artery biopsy between 1996-2002 were analyzed.
  • Race and Hispanic origin were determined via US Census Bureau methodology through a prospective telephone survey.

Main Results:

  • Of 134 interviewed patients, 65 were Hispanic and 69 non-Hispanic.
  • Among 32 with biopsy-proven GCA, 13 were Hispanic and 19 non-Hispanic (P = .32).
  • No statistically significant differences were found in age, symptoms, or visual acuity between Hispanic and non-Hispanic GCA patients.

Conclusions:

  • The study found similar prevalence and clinical course of GCA in Hispanic and non-Hispanic patients.
  • These findings contrast with prior literature suggesting GCA is rare in Hispanic individuals.
  • Further research is warranted to understand GCA epidemiology across diverse ethnic groups.
