Background:

  • Limited data exists comparing accelerometer-measured physical activity in overweight/obese versus normal-weight adults.
  • Compliance with the 2002 Institute of Medicine (IOM) daily exercise recommendations has not been previously reported.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare physical activity levels, using accelerometers, between overweight/obese adults and normal-weight controls.
  • To assess adherence to 1995 CDC/ACSM and 2002 IOM physical activity guidelines.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty-two participants (31 overweight/obese, 31 normal-weight) matched for gender, age, and height.
  • Body composition assessed via DXA.
  • Physical activity measured using Actigraph accelerometers for 7 consecutive days.

Main Results:

  • Overweight/obese adults were less active, with ~60 fewer counts per minute and 21 fewer minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity daily compared to normal-weight controls.
  • While 71%-94% met 1995 guidelines, only 13% of overweight/obese and 26% of normal-weight individuals met the 2002 IOM recommendations.

Conclusions:

  • Daily moderate-intensity physical activity is linked to weight status.
  • The 2002 IOM recommendations appear challenging to achieve, even for normal-weight individuals.
