Summary

Optic nerve transection (ONT) in rats reveals significant gene expression changes in the retina. This study identified novel genes and potential targets for inherited glaucoma screening.

  • Microarray analysis revealed differential expression of hundreds of genes post-ONT.
  • Over 493 genes showed increased expression and 113 genes showed decreased expression (≥1.5 fold).
  • Thirteen differentially regulated genes were mapped to known glaucoma loci, suggesting potential for mutation screening.
  • Conclusions:

    • Gene expression profiles after ONT can identify key RGC-expressed genes.
    • This study provides insights into molecular alterations in the retina following RGC loss.
    • Identified genes may be crucial for RGC function and offer targets for glaucoma research.
