Summary

Task-irrelevant visual motion and flicker can reduce the attentional blink (AB), a deficit in reporting sequential targets. These findings suggest that overallocating attention, not just diffuse attention, mediates this effect.

Background:

  • The attentional blink (AB) is a well-documented deficit in reporting two targets presented in close succession.
  • Previous research indicated that non-task-demanding music can abolish the AB, suggesting a role for diffuse attention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether task-irrelevant visual motion and flicker, similar to music, can attenuate the attentional blink.
  • To broaden the understanding of factors influencing the AB and the underlying attentional mechanisms.

  • Participants performed an attentional blink task.
  • A background field of moving dots (moving away, toward, or flickering) or static dots was presented concurrently.
