Sitosterolaemia, a rare lipid disorder, causes extremely high plant sterol levels. Ezetimibe effectively reduced sitosterol levels and xanthomas in a patient with this condition.

Area of Science:

  • Lipid Metabolism Disorders
  • Dermatology
  • Cardiovascular Disease

Background:

  • Sitosterolaemia is a rare genetic lipid disorder characterized by extremely elevated plasma plant sterol levels.
  • Clinical manifestations include tuberous and tendon xanthomas, premature vascular disease, and arthritis.

Observation:

  • A 60-year-old woman presented with cutaneous xanthomas, hypertension, and polyarthralgias.
  • She had a long history of hypercholesterolaemia refractory to fenofibrate treatment.

Findings:

  • Ezetimibe therapy was initiated, leading to a significant decrease in plasma sitosterol levels.
  • Tuberous xanthomas showed marked improvement after 3 months of ezetimibe treatment.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Early detection of plasma sitosterol levels is crucial in patients with xanthomas, premature vascular disease, and uncontrolled hypercholesterolaemia.
  • Ezetimibe therapy demonstrates efficacy in managing sitosterolaemia and its associated symptoms.
