Lack of correlation between cortical demyelination and white matter pathologic changes in multiple sclerosis

Subpial demyelination in multiple sclerosis (MS) gray matter is not linked to white matter (WM) damage seen on MRI. This suggests gray matter lesions in MS develop independently of WM pathology.
