Exercise Stress Test01:26

Exercise Stress Test

Introduction
Exercise stress testing, commonly known as a treadmill test, is a noninvasive procedure used to evaluate cardiovascular function and diagnose heart conditions.
Definition
An exercise stress test measures the heart's response to exertion using a treadmill or stationary bicycle. Chest electrodes record the heart's electrical activity through an ECG, and blood pressure is monitored regularly.

Diabetic Foot Ulcer01:31

Diabetic Foot Ulcer

Definition A diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a chronic, non-healing wound that develops in individuals with diabetes. It typically occurs on pressure-bearing areas such as the heel, metatarsal heads, or hallux, and carries a high risk of infection and amputation.Pathophysiology • The development of DFUs can be explained by four interconnected mechanisms: neuropathy, ischemia, infection, and impaired wound healing. • Neuropathy is the most common factor. Sensory neuropathy reduces pain perception,...

Summary

Sacral stress fractures are an uncommon cause of low back pain, particularly in female distance runners. This case highlights a rare instance of bilateral sacral stress fractures in a male runner.

Area of Science:

  • Sports Medicine
  • Orthopedics
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Athletically induced sacral stress fractures are an infrequent cause of low back pain.
  • Diagnosis is crucial for patients presenting with nonradicular low back or buttock pain.

Observation:

  • Female distance runners are disproportionately affected by sacral stress fractures.
  • These fractures are typically unilateral.

Findings:

  • This case report details a rare instance of bilateral sacral stress fractures.
  • The affected individual was a male runner.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should consider sacral stress fractures in the differential diagnosis of low back pain in athletes.
  • This case expands the understanding of sacral stress fracture presentation beyond the typical demographic and fracture pattern.
