Background:

  • Physical rehabilitation is crucial for stroke survivors.
  • Limited data exists on nurse-led range-of-motion (ROM) exercise programs for stroke patients in long-term care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a nurse-led ROM exercise program for stroke survivors.
  • To assess improvements in joint flexibility, activity function, pain perception, and depressive symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 59 bedridden stroke survivors in residential care.
  • Participants were assigned to usual care or one of two intervention groups over 4 weeks.
  • Intervention groups performed twice-daily ROM exercises, with one group supervised by a Registered Nurse (RN) and the other physically assisted by an RN.

Main Results:

  • Both intervention groups showed significant improvements in joint angles, activity function, pain, and depressive symptoms compared to the usual care group (P < 0.05).
  • The group receiving physical assistance from an RN demonstrated significantly wider joint angles than both other groups (P < 0.01).

Conclusions:

  • A simple nurse-led ROM exercise program positively impacts the physical and psychological function of bedridden stroke survivors.
  • Further research is needed to explore long-term effects on function, care utilization, and quality of life.
