Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the morbidity and mortality associated with lung metastasectomy.
  • To identify factors that predict early relapse after lung metastasectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 38 patients who underwent lung metastasectomy via posterolateral thoracotomy.
  • Variables analyzed included patient demographics, primary tumor characteristics, disease-free interval, metastasis details, surgical outcomes, and follow-up data.

Main Results:

  • No perioperative deaths were recorded. Morbidity was 11%, with one case requiring reintervention for haemothorax.
  • One, two, and three-year survival rates were 87%, 61%, and 25%, respectively.
  • Relapse-free rates at one, two, and three years were 71%, 56%, and 17%, respectively. Early relapse was associated with sarcoma histology, shorter disease-free intervals, and a higher number of metastases.

Conclusions:

  • Lung metastasectomy can be performed with acceptable morbidity and mortality rates.
  • Complete surgical resection, histological tumor type, disease-free interval, and the number of lung metastases are crucial prognostic factors for survival.
