  • Social Psychiatry
  • Mental Health Research

Background:

  • Social disability is a significant challenge for individuals with psychiatric disorders.
  • Understanding factors influencing social functioning is crucial for effective treatment and rehabilitation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate social disability across various psychiatric disorders.
  • To identify predictors of social functioning in patients with mental health conditions.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-site survey was conducted in five European psychiatric hospitals.
  • Working-aged patients with schizophrenia, affective, anxiety, eating, and personality disorders were assessed using standardized scales.
  • Social disability was measured at admission and three months post-discharge.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • During acute episodes, patients with personality, eating, and schizophrenia disorders showed greater social disability than those with affective or anxiety disorders.
  • After controlling for psychopathology severity, diagnosis, sex, education, and disorder history did not significantly affect social disability during remission.
  • Hospital site, employment status, and partnership were significant predictors of social disability.

Conclusions:

  • The severity of psychopathological symptoms, rather than the specific psychiatric diagnosis, is the primary determinant of social functioning, especially during remission.
  • Social determinants such as employment and partnership significantly influence social disability levels.
