Juvenile xanthogranulomas, a rare skin condition, presented in a teen with multiple lesions. CO2 laser treatment proved effective, with no recurrence over five years.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Histiocytosis
  • Immunohistochemistry

Background:

  • Juvenile xanthogranulomas (JXG) are rare, benign skin conditions.
  • They are part of the non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis spectrum.
  • JXG typically presents without systemic organ involvement.

Observation:

  • A 16-year-old female developed multiple JXG lesions over six months.
  • Lesions predominantly affected the trunk and flexural areas.
  • Clinical diagnosis was confirmed via histology and immunohistochemistry.

Findings:

  • Histology revealed characteristic histiocytic infiltrate with foam cells and Touton giant cells.
  • Immunohistochemistry using anti-stabilin-1 antibodies confirmed the diagnosis.
  • No signs of diabetes insipidus, pituitary hyperplasia, or paraproteinemia were noted.

Implications:

  • CO2 laser ablation is an effective treatment for cutaneous JXG.
  • Long-term follow-up confirmed the efficacy and safety of this treatment modality.
  • This case highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis and targeted therapy for JXG.
