Summary
Excision of a neglected, deformed middle cuneiform bone after plantar dislocation provides a painless foot with no disability. This surgical approach offers good results for such rare foot injuries.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedic surgery
- Podiatric medicine
- Traumatology
Background:
- Plantar dislocation of the middle cuneiform is a rare injury.
- Only four cases have been reported in English literature, all treated with open reduction for fresh injuries.
Observation:
- A farmer presented with a neglected plantar dislocation of the middle cuneiform bone, 9 months post-injury.
- The dislocated bone was deformed due to repeated weight-bearing and subsequent fibrous tissue ingrowth.
Findings:
- Surgical excision of the neglected, deformed middle cuneiform bone was performed via a plantar incision.
- The procedure resulted in a painless foot without any functional disability for the patient.
Implications:
- Excision is a viable treatment option for neglected plantar dislocations of the middle cuneiform.
- This approach can restore function and alleviate pain in cases where the bone has become deformed.
