Area of Science:

  • Neonatal Medicine
  • Perinatal Pathology
  • Obstetrics

Context:

  • Perinatal infection and inflammation are associated with significant neonatal morbidity.
  • Bronchopulmonary dysplasia and periventricular leukomalacia are key concerns in preterm infants.
  • Histological chorioamnionitis serves as a marker for intrauterine infection/inflammation.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the association between histological chorioamnionitis and the overall morbidity of preterm newborns.
  • To specifically examine the link between histological chorioamnionitis and lung damage in very low birthweight preterm neonates.

Summary:

  • A retrospective study analyzed 452 preterm newborns (<34 weeks gestational age) and their mothers.
  • Histological chorioamnionitis showed associations with conditions like bronchopulmonary dysplasia, patent ductus arteriosus, intraventricular hemorrhage, and cystic periventricular leukomalacia.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Adjusted analyses confirmed a significant association between histological chorioamnionitis and cystic periventricular leukomalacia.
  • Impact:

    • This research reinforces the understanding of how intrauterine conditions impact neonatal outcomes.
    • Findings highlight cystic periventricular leukomalacia as a significant risk associated with histological chorioamnionitis.
    • The study contributes to identifying preterm infants at higher risk for specific morbidities.
