Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Oncology
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • A 70-year-old woman with recurrent non-small-cell lung cancer was treated with erlotinib HCl.
  • Erlotinib HCl is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor used in cancer therapy.

Observation:

  • The patient developed escalating ocular irritation after several months of erlotinib HCl treatment.
  • Examination revealed aberrant, coarse, and brittle eyelash growth.

Findings:

  • The aberrant eyelash growth was identified as the cause of a corneal ulcer.
  • This condition is a documented, albeit uncommon, side effect of erlotinib HCl therapy.

Implications:

  • Ophthalmologists should consider erlotinib HCl therapy when evaluating patients with unusual eyelash abnormalities and corneal irritation.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Prompt management with epilation and trimming can resolve symptoms and prevent further ocular damage.
  • Awareness of this side effect is crucial for oncologists managing patients on erlotinib HCl.
