RNA Editing

RNA editing is a post-transcriptional modification where a precursor mRNA (pre-mRNA) nucleotide sequence is changed by base insertion, deletion, or modification. Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine plasma adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels in patients diagnosed with hydatidiform mole.
  • To compare ADA levels between hydatidiform mole patients, normal pregnant women, and non-pregnant volunteers.
  • To evaluate the diagnostic potential of ADA as a biomarker for hydatidiform mole.

Main Methods:

  • Plasma samples were collected from three groups: 17 women with hydatidiform mole, 17 women with normal pregnancies, and 17 non-pregnant healthy volunteers.
  • Adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity was measured in all plasma samples.
  • Statistical analysis was performed to compare ADA levels across groups and determine diagnostic accuracy.

Main Results:

  • Mean ADA activity was significantly higher in the hydatidiform mole group (121.5+/-24.8 U/L) compared to normal pregnant (7.8+/-6.5 U/L) and non-pregnant controls (6.4+/-7.4 U/L) (p<0.0001 for both).
  • A cutoff ADA level of 40.5 U/L demonstrated 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity for diagnosing hydatidiform mole.
  • These findings indicate a strong association between elevated ADA levels and the presence of hydatidiform mole.

Conclusions:

  • Adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels are markedly elevated in patients with hydatidiform mole.
  • ADA shows potential as a highly sensitive and specific biomarker for hydatidiform mole diagnosis.
  • The enzyme ADA may be implicated in the pathophysiology of hydatidiform mole development.
