Area of Science:

  • Nutritional Science
  • Public Health
  • Biochemistry

Background:

  • Selenium is an essential trace element crucial for various physiological functions.
  • Assessing selenium status is important for understanding population health and preventing deficiency-related diseases.
  • Southern Tasmania's specific dietary patterns may influence local selenium levels.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the selenium status of adults residing in Southern Tasmania.
  • To identify demographic groups potentially at risk for sub-optimal selenium levels.
  • To inform public health strategies regarding selenium intake.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 1500 randomly selected adults from the Greater Hobart region.
  • 335 participants completed the study, providing venous blood samples and demographic/health questionnaires.

  • Plasma selenium levels were analyzed using magnetic sector ICP-MS.
  • Main Results:

    • The mean plasma selenium level was 110 microg/l, with 71% of participants having levels >100 microg/l, indicating sufficiency.
    • Sub-optimal selenium levels (<100 microg/l) were observed in 42% of women under 50 and 32% of men over 50.
    • Lower educational attainment was significantly associated with lower plasma selenium levels (P<0.02).

    Conclusions:

    • The majority of Southern Tasmanians studied exhibited adequate selenium status.
    • Targeted dietary advice to increase selenium-rich food intake is recommended for at-risk groups.
    • This approach may be more effective than supplementation due to selenium's narrow therapeutic window.
