Interleukin-18 and its three gene polymorphisms relating to allergic rhinitis

Investigating single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the IL-18 gene, this study found combined genotypes, not individual ones, were significantly associated with allergic rhinitis (AR). Specific IL-18 variants linked to Alternaria allergy and IgE levels in AR patients.

- No significant differences were observed in individual IL-18 allele or genotype frequencies between AR patients and controls.

Conclusions:
- Combined IL-18 genotypes, rather than individual SNPs, are significantly associated with allergic rhinitis.
- The IL-18-607 polymorphism may be linked to elevated IgE levels and Alternaria sensitization in AR patients.
- IL-18 gene variants could be contributing factors in the pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis and its phenotypes.
