[Ambroise Paré and the frog]
1Laboratoire d'Anatomie et Embryologie, Faculté de Médecine, U.L.B., Bruxelles.
Abstract:
During the XVIth century, Ambroise Paré described the birth of a child with a " frog head". The occurrence of the malformation was explained by a "medical" treatment, which implied that the mother must take a frog in her hand. It was supposed that the abnormality could be a macrostomia, due to a lack of fusion of maxillar and mandibular buds. We present here a postmortem specimen of macrostomia, with CT scanner exploration. Differential diagnosis with a cyclotocephaly is discussed.
