Summary

A rare intraventricular hemangiopericytoma in a 41-year-old male showed significant shrinkage after Linac irradiation. Subsequent surgical removal was less complicated due to reduced tumor vascularity.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Neuropathology

Background:

  • Hemangiopericytomas are rare tumors, with intraventricular locations being exceptionally uncommon.
  • This case presents a large hemangiopericytoma in the trigone of the lateral ventricle, a unique anatomical site.

Observation:

  • A 41-year-old male presented with headache and right shoulder/arm paresthesia due to a large intraventricular hemangiopericytoma.
  • Initial partial tumor resection was followed by 50 Gy of local Linac irradiation over six weeks.

Findings:

  • Post-irradiation, the residual tumor showed a marked decrease in size and vascularity.
  • A second surgical intervention achieved complete tumor removal with significantly reduced operative bleeding compared to the initial procedure.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights the potential efficacy of combined surgical and Linac irradiation treatment for intraventricular hemangiopericytomas.
  • The findings suggest that neoadjuvant irradiation can facilitate less invasive surgical resection of these rare tumors.
  • This report expands the understanding of hemangiopericytoma presentation and management in rare intraventricular locations.
