Background:

Acrylamide is a chemical used in industrial processes, including polymer production.
Long-term occupational exposure to acrylamide may pose health risks.
Previous studies have investigated the carcinogenicity and toxicity of acrylamide.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the long-term health outcomes, including cancer and non-malignant diseases, associated with occupational acrylamide exposure.
To assess the relationship between acrylamide exposure levels and cause-specific mortality in production and polymerization workers.

Main Methods:

An expanded cohort study included 696 acrylamide workers, followed from 1955 to 2001.
Vital status and cause of death were ascertained.
Occupational exposure was retrospectively assessed using personal and area air samples.

Main Results:

Overall mortality was lower than expected (SMR 81.9).
No cancer deaths were found to be exposure-related, but pancreatic cancer deaths were elevated (SMR 222.2).
Diabetes mortality was significantly higher than expected (SMR 288.7), persisting after adjusting for regional factors.

Conclusions:

Limited evidence suggests no significant cancer risk from occupational acrylamide exposure in production facilities.
Elevated pancreatic cancer rates warrant further investigation to rule out a potential risk.
Excess diabetes mortality is unlikely related to acrylamide exposure, considering conflicting data from other studies and probable lack of regional influence.
