Older urology patients (75+) undergoing laparoscopic surgery experienced longer hospital stays but similar complication rates compared to younger patients. Age did not significantly impact operative time or blood loss in these procedures.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Geriatric Surgery
- Minimally Invasive Surgery
Background:
- Increasing age is a factor in surgical outcomes.
- Laparoscopic procedures are common in urology.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the impact of advanced age on laparoscopic urologic surgery outcomes.
- Compare outcomes for patients aged 75 and older versus younger patients.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of 175 patients undergoing laparoscopic urologic procedures (1998-2005).
- Comparison of patients aged 75+ with all other patients.
- Analysis of hospitalization length, complications, blood loss, operative time, ASA class, and Charlson comorbidity index (CCI).
Main Results:
- No significant differences in operative time, estimated blood loss (EBL), or complication rates between age groups.
- Significantly longer length of hospital stay for patients aged 75+ (6.06 days vs. 3.74 days).
- Increased hospitalization length persisted in subgroup analysis (65-74 vs. 75+) even after controlling for complications.
Conclusions:
- Laparoscopic surgery in patients 75 and older results in longer hospital stays.
- Perioperative complications are not significantly increased with age in these procedures.
- Age is not a significant predictor of complications but is associated with extended hospitalization.
