This study found a significantly higher prevalence of fibromyalgia syndrome in patients with sleep disordered breathing. The findings suggest a strong association between these two conditions, warranting further investigation into sleep disordered breathing as a potential factor in fibromyalgia.
Area of Science:
- Sleep Medicine
- Rheumatology
- Clinical Research
Background:
- Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) affects a significant portion of the population.
- Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain and fatigue.
- The relationship between SDB and FMS requires further elucidation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the prevalence of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) in patients diagnosed with sleep disordered breathing (SDB).
- To explore a potential association between SDB and FMS.
Main Methods:
- Fifty patients presenting to a sleep disorder clinic for symptoms like snoring, apnea, and excessive daytime sleepiness were enrolled.
- Sleep disordered breathing was diagnosed using polysomnography.
- Fibromyalgia syndrome diagnosis was based on the American College of Rheumatology criteria.
Main Results:
- Out of 50 patients (32 male, 18 female), 11 met the criteria for fibromyalgia syndrome (9 women, 2 men).
- The mean apnea-hypopnea index was 36 +/- 29 events/hour, indicating moderate to severe SDB.
- The prevalence of FMS in this SDB patient group was substantially higher than in the general population.
Conclusions:
- The study observed a more than tenfold higher proportion of fibromyalgia cases in patients with sleep disordered breathing compared to the general population.
- These findings support a hypothesis linking sleep disordered breathing and fibromyalgia syndrome.
- Further research is recommended to understand the underlying mechanisms of this association.
