Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Speech-Language Pathology

Background:

  • Developmental stuttering (DS) is a common speech disorder affecting fluency and timing.
  • Persistent developmental stuttering (PDS) refers to DS that persists without remission.
  • Adults with PDS often experience relapse during or after speech therapy.

Observation:

  • This case report focuses on an adult patient with persistent developmental stuttering.
  • The patient was undergoing behavioral speech therapy programs.
  • The patient experienced regression and relapse despite therapy.

Findings:

  • The patient was treated with fluoxetine.
  • Significant improvement in stuttering symptoms was observed after fluoxetine treatment.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Fluoxetine may be a potential therapeutic option for persistent developmental stuttering.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the efficacy of pharmacotherapy in PDS.
  • This finding could offer new avenues for managing chronic speech disorders.
