Story time: not just for children anymore
1BARBARA L. BEHRMANN is the author of The Breastfeeding Café: Mothers Share the Joys, Challenges, and Secrets of Nursing (University of Michigan Press), which was published in March. She presents talks and readings, in addition to conducting birthing and breastfeeding writing circles.
Abstract:
Sharing breastfeeding stories has enormous value for both teller and listener. In a culture that often misunderstands and devalues breastfeeding and the nursing relationship, stories reduce women's anxiety and insecurity, validate their experiences, reveal the social and cultural roots of these experiences, and illuminate why breastfeeding matters so much to women.
