Vision

Vision

Vision is the result of light being detected and transduced into neural signals by the retina of the eye. This information is then further analyzed and interpreted by the brain. First, light enters the front of the eye and is focused by the cornea and lens onto the retina—a thin sheet of neural tissue lining the back of the eye. Because of refraction through the convex lens of the eye, images are projected onto the retina upside-down and reversed.

Background:

Preschool vision screening is crucial for early detection of visual impairments.
Family physicians play a role in child healthcare, including vision screening.

Purpose of the Study:

Determine the rate of preschool vision screening in family practice.
Evaluate physician attitudes towards preschool vision screening.
Identify barriers to preschool vision screening.

Main Methods:

A national mail survey was conducted among family physicians.
The survey assessed current screening practices, attitudes, and perceived barriers.

Main Results:

90% of physicians deemed preschool vision screening important, with 91% incorporating some eye exam components into well-child care.
Formal screening rates increased with age, but stereoacuity testing was infrequent (7%).
Key barriers included perceived lack of cooperation (39%) and time constraints (21%).

Conclusions:

Family physician screening rates are comparable to pediatricians.
Education on optimal screening strategies and outcomes is needed to improve rate and quality.
Ophthalmologists can support this by providing feedback to referring physicians.
