Cytomegalovirus Disease01:27

Cytomegalovirus Disease

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease is caused by human cytomegalovirus, a double-stranded DNA virus of the Herpesviridae family. While primary CMV infection is often asymptomatic in immunocompetent individuals, the virus can cause severe disease in neonates and immunocompromised patients. CMV is the most common cause of congenital viral infection in the United States, and a major pathogen in solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients.CMV is transmitted via bodily fluids, sexual...

Summary

Madelung disease, a benign symmetric lipomatosis, presents with fatty tissue accumulation. Surgical intervention offers good results for this uncommon condition, particularly when impacting neck mobility.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Dermatology
  • Metabolic Disorders

Background:

  • Madelung disease, also known as benign symmetric lipomatosis, is an uncommon condition typically affecting adults aged 30-60.
  • It is characterized by the symmetric accumulation of non-encapsulated fatty tissue, primarily in the neck (Type I) and upper back/shoulder girdle (Type II).
  • Type III involves disproportionate subcutaneous tissue in the pelvic girdle. The exact pathogenesis remains unclear, but alcohol consumption is a significant risk factor.

Observation:

  • A case study of a 60-year-old male patient with Madelung disease is presented.
  • The patient experienced the onset of lipomatosis in the neck as a single nodule six years prior to presentation.
  • This condition progressively led to a severe decrease in neck movement range.

Findings:

  • The diagnosis of Madelung disease was established in the described patient.
  • Surgical treatment was performed for the patient's lipomatosis.
  • The surgical intervention resulted in positive outcomes and improved the patient's condition.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the potential for significant functional impairment caused by Madelung disease, particularly affecting neck mobility.
  • Surgical management appears to be an effective treatment modality for symptomatic Madelung disease.
  • Further research into the pathogenesis of Madelung disease may lead to improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
