Summary

Lower limb amputees use different strategies for obstacle crossing. Transfemoral amputees compensate for limited knee flexion with hip circumduction, while transtibial amputees prefer using their prosthetic limb first.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate functional limitations and adaptive strategies in transfemoral and transtibial amputees during obstacle crossing.

Main Methods:

  • Observational cohort study involving amputees and able-bodied individuals.
  • Motion analysis in a laboratory setting.
  • Subjects crossed a 0.1m high obstacle; gait velocity, joint angles, and limb preference were measured.

Main Results:

  • Transfemoral amputees showed decreased knee flexion, compensating with hip circumduction and non-affected ankle plantar flexion.
  • Transtibial amputees and able-bodied subjects increased knee flexion.
  • Transtibial amputees preferred leading with the prosthetic limb; transfemoral amputees preferred the non-affected limb.

Conclusions:

  • Prosthetic knee limitations influence leading limb strategy in transfemoral amputees.
  • Rehabilitation focusing on obstacle crossing and improved prosthetic design can enhance safety.
