Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the impact of different prime-trial types on spatial negative priming.
  • To determine the longevity and characteristics of the spatial NP effect under varying conditions.

Main Methods:

  • A spatial negative priming paradigm with prime-probe trial pairs was employed.
  • Participants manually responded to target locations.
  • Three prime-trial types (distractor-plus-target, predictable distractor-only, unpredictable distractor-only) were tested with varying onset delays (2, 5, 10 s and 75, 750 ms).

Main Results:

  • Spatial NP effects (size, longevity, distractor response activation-inhibition) were consistent across prime-trial types, except for a 10 s onset delay.
  • Varying processing demands of prime-trial types did not differentially affect prime distractor processing in relation to spatial NP.

Conclusions:

  • The three prime-trial types investigated are largely interchangeable for studying the spatial negative priming process.
  • This interchangeability offers flexibility in designing future experiments on spatial NP.
