Radiological Investigation III: Pulmonary Angiogram and PET Scan01:13

Radiological Investigation III: Pulmonary Angiogram and PET Scan

Radiological investigations are paramount in the diagnosis and management of various pulmonary diseases. Two essential investigations are the Pulmonary Angiogram and the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan.
Pulmonary Angiogram
A Pulmonary Angiogram is an invasive procedure involving injecting a contrast medium through a catheter threaded into the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart to visualize the pulmonary vasculature. Computed Tomography (CT) scans have mainly replaced this...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a vascular malignancy.
  • Assessing KS vascularity is crucial for treatment monitoring.
  • Non-invasive methods offer objective evaluation potential.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate thermography, laser Doppler imaging, and near-infrared multi-spectral imaging for quantitative assessment of KS vascularity.
  • To correlate imaging parameters with KS lesion characteristics.
  • To assess the sensitivity of these techniques in monitoring treatment response.

Main Methods:

  • Thermography, laser Doppler imaging, and near-infrared multi-spectral imaging were employed.
  • Quantitative vascular parameters including temperature, blood velocity, and blood deoxy-hemoglobin were measured.
  • Lesion parameters were assessed at baseline and after 18 weeks of experimental drug treatment.

Main Results:

  • Kaposi's sarcoma lesions exhibited increased temperature, blood velocity, and blood deoxy-hemoglobin.
  • A strong correlation was found between temperature and blood velocity (R=0.81, p<0.001).
  • Treatment led to significant reductions in temperature, blood velocity, blood volume, and deoxy-hemoglobin from baseline.

Conclusions:

  • Thermography, laser Doppler imaging, and near-infrared multi-spectral imaging are objective and sensitive tools for assessing KS vascularity.
  • These non-invasive techniques effectively monitor therapeutic response in Kaposi's sarcoma.
  • The methods provide quantitative data for evaluating treatment efficacy in KS lesions.
