Cognitive Development During Adulthood01:30

Cognitive Development During Adulthood

Cognitive development continues throughout adulthood, undergoing significant shifts across early, middle, and late stages. Individual transition occurs from adolescent idealism to pragmatic and adaptable thinking in early adulthood. During this period, individuals learn to integrate personal beliefs with the recognition that other perspectives are equally valid. Exposure to the complexities of modern society, diverse experiences, and higher education contribute to this adaptive thought process,...

Pharmacodynamics in Geriatric Patients: Effects of Age

Age-related pharmacokinetic changes are extensively documented, but understanding age-related pharmacodynamic alterations is relatively limited. This knowledge gap can be partly attributed to the complexity of developing appropriate measures of drug responses compared to bioanalytical methods for determining drug concentrations. Most information regarding age-related differences in human pharmacodynamics originates from cross-sectional studies. However, these studies assume that observed mean...
Coping Strategies: Problem Focused01:27

Coping Strategies: Problem Focused

Coping strategies are methods people use to manage, tolerate, or reduce the effects of stressors. These strategies involve both behavioral and psychological actions to handle stressful situations. One common approach is problem-focused coping, which aims to change or eliminate the source of stress rather than merely addressing its consequences. This method involves taking direct action to resolve the issue causing stress.
For example, consider a student who struggles to understand their...

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who are...

Relationship with Other Adult Family Members and Siblings

Other adult family members and siblings play a crucial role in shaping children’s social and emotional development. While parents or primary caregivers are often the central figures in early attachment and socialization, other adults in a child’s life, such as grandparents, aunts, and uncles, can significantly influence developmental outcomes. These influences depend on each adult’s personality and may help compensate when a primary caregiver is emotionally distant or inconsistent. For...
Problem-Solving01:29

Problem-Solving

Effective problem-solving consists of two steps: 1. identifying the problem and 2. selecting the appropriate problem-solving strategy (i.e., a plan of action used to find a solution). Humans use four problem-solving strategies:

Summary

Older adults use more problem-focused strategies for instrumental issues and avoidant strategies for interpersonal ones. Despite strategy differences, older adults demonstrate greater effectiveness in everyday problem-solving compared to younger adults.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Developmental Psychology

Background:

  • Everyday problem-solving skills are crucial for maintaining functional independence in aging.
  • Understanding age-related differences in problem-solving strategies can inform interventions.
  • Previous research suggests varying approaches to problem-solving across the lifespan.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate age-related differences in problem-solving strategy use and effectiveness.
  • To compare strategy endorsement and outcomes in instrumental versus interpersonal problem domains.
  • To examine four distinct problem-solving strategies: avoidance-denial, passive dependence, planful problem solving, and cognitive analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the Everyday Problem Solving Inventory (Cornelius & Caspi).
  • Assessed strategy endorsement and effectiveness across instrumental, interpersonal, and mixed domains.
  • Compared young adults and older adults on problem-solving approaches.

Main Results:

  • Older adults were more problem-focused for instrumental problems than young adults.
  • Older adults employed more avoidance-denial strategies for interpersonal problems compared to young adults.
  • Older adults exhibited greater overall effectiveness in solving everyday problems, particularly interpersonal ones.

Conclusions:

  • Age influences the choice of problem-solving strategies, with distinct patterns for instrumental and interpersonal issues.
  • Despite differing strategy selection, older adults generally outperform younger adults in everyday problem-solving effectiveness.
  • Findings highlight the adaptive nature of problem-solving in later life, especially in social contexts.
